MKU Nursing Students to Pursue Apprenticeship Opportunities in German Hospitals

Twelve more Nursing students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) are set to pursue apprenticeship opportunities in German hospitals following a partnership between MKU and other institutions in the European country.

This brings the number of Nursing students from the institution pursuing apprenticeship opportunities in German hospitals to 25, after the institution sent a team of five students in the first cohort and another eight in the second.

The University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the students will depart for Germany to pursue their apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, their main partner in offering apprenticeship opportunities to their students.

“All the 12 will be leaving this Friday and will be received in Germany the following day. They will be taken straight away to Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences for the apprenticeship,” Prof. Jaganyi said.

The VC said the students are set to benefit from invaluable experience in the global healthcare, offering them unique opportunities to gain practical skills and knowledge in diverse medical settings.

He added that another 35 students have chosen to pursue their careers on this initiative and will soon get the opportunity in Cohort Four to pursue their apprenticeship in the European country.

A notable component of the programme is the requirement for German language proficiency, an initiative supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), who have seconded the language’s lecturers at the University to teach German.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research Dr. Mercyline Kamande said the programme will be broadened to not only Nursing but also Medical Technologists in radiology to provide a scope of opportunities to more health sector workers.

Additionally, she said an AI-enabled German Language Training Program will be used, significantly enhancing learning efficiency by ensuring that even more students qualify for international apprenticeship programmes.

“With these advancements, we are now in a strong position to deepen our engagement with partners, thus ensuring that Kenyan students have access to diverse and rewarding career pathways in Germany and beyond,” noted the DVC.

The University’s Chairman of the Council Dr Vincent Gaitho underscored the need for networks to thrive in today’s competitive world.
